About
Who We Are
Homeowner Prep is a 501c3 nonprofit organization focused on reversing the current homeownership and household wealth statistics in Black, Brown, and Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) communities. We are providing a solution to help aspiring homeowners take the first steps necessary to achieve homeownership for themselves and leave lasting generational wealth for their future generations.
We are committed to providing financial literacy and personalized accountability for to those who are looking to learn and change their family’s financial position. We are partnering with corporate partners and donors to provide our services free of charge, providing services focused on equity and inclusion, thus making homeownership accessible for all.
Located in San Diego, California, our organization serve clients virtually and hosts in-person events throughout San Diego, Orange, and Los Angeles counties. Our plans for expansion will help us serve BIPOC communities throughout the United States and primarily the most unaffordable communities for aspiring homeowners.
Our Mission
We educate and encourage aspiring homeowners to buy and leverage their first home so they can create lasting generational wealth.
Our Focus
The homeownership gap in America remains a significant issue, particularly affecting Black Americans. As of 2021, the homeownership rate for Black households stood at approximately 45.7%, compared to 74.3% for White households, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, and it’s not much better for Hispanic (49.5%) and American Indian (51.6%) households either. This disparity highlights a persistent racial inequality in housing, rooted in historical and systemic racism and discrimination.
Historically, discriminatory practices such as redlining, restrictive covenants, and racial steering have excluded Black Americans from homeownership opportunities. Despite the Fair Housing Act of 1968, which aimed to eliminate discrimination, these practices have had long-lasting effects and the gap in homeownership today is wider than it was when the Fair Housing Act was passed.
Modern barriers include discriminatory lending practices, lower access to credit, appraisal discrimination, and economic disparities, with Black households generally having lower incomes and savings compared to their White counterparts.
To close the homeownership gap, we are focusing on several solutions:
- Financial Literacy – learning about financial management, budgeting, credit, savings, and homeownership are the first step to realizing true solutions.
- Access To Housing – affordable homes in local neighborhoods need to be available for purchase by those who have been disenfranchised and given an opportunity to compete even as first time home buyers.
- Financial Assistance – programs that provide down payment assistance, grants, and closing costs will help bridge the homeownership gap.
These are tangible solutions we are addressing by educating, encouraging, and supporting our clients in their goal to own their first home.
The wealth gap in America remains a profound issue, with significant disparities between different racial and ethnic groups. As of recent data, the median wealth of White households is significantly higher than that of Black, Hispanic, and American Indian households. According to the Federal Reserve’s 2019 Survey of Consumer Finances, the median wealth for White families was $188,200, compared to $24,100 for Black families and $36,100 for Hispanic families. American Indian households also face substantial disparities, although specific data is less frequently reported; studies suggest their wealth levels are similar to those of Black and Hispanic households. Recent studies have also found that if trends continue to persist, declining Black wealth in America will reach $0 by 2053.
Historical and systemic factors contribute to these disparities. For Black and Hispanic families, historical discrimination, such as redlining, exclusion from New Deal benefits, and unequal education opportunities, have impeded wealth accumulation. For American Indian households, the legacy of land dispossession, forced relocations, and economic marginalization has had long-term impacts on wealth building.
Closing the wealth gap requires a multifaceted approach. The key solutions we are focused on are:
- Homeownership Support – Providing access to down payment assistance, closing costs, and affordable housing programs increase homeownership rates among minority groups.
- Education – Investing in financial education and literacy programs tailored to underserved communities.
- Access To Grants – Expanding access to grants through donations and corporate sponsors to empower minority households to build and manage wealth effectively.
By addressing these issues for our clients, we can help reduce the wealth gap and promote economic equity in America.
