Hello, and welcome to another episode of The Homeowner Prep Podcast. I’m your host, Eric Hellon, and on today’s episode, I’m going to talk about how to stay motivated throughout the home buying process. I know that buying a home can take a lot longer than you may expect. For some folks, it does happen pretty quickly, but for the majority of people, there are challenges, there are obstacles that they have to overcome in order to buy their first home. So on today’s episode, I really want to dive into a few techniques and ways that you can battle through and see your way to the finish line of the home buying process.

I really wanted to cover this topic because we had a client who recently bought their first home and we’ve been working with them for more than five years, and they had some challenges. They had job changes, they had a lot of things going on in that time, but at the end of the day, they became first time home buyers and they’re so excited. It meant so much more for them to overcome those different challenges and to reach their goal of homeownership. So I wanted to talk about a few things that I think helped them get to the finish line and can help you as well.

The first thing I want to start with is you have to start with a serious “why”. Why do you want to buy a home? When you’re deciding to buy a place of your own and stop paying rent, there has to be a strong motivation to help you get there, to help you battle through whatever challenges come your way.

I always go back to an example that I once heard that said, if you were standing on the top of a tall building and you had to go 10ft across to another building on a 4″ plank of wood, would you do it? And most people say, “No, if I’m up 100 stories, there’s no way I’m crossing over that small piece of wood to get to the next building.” And then it says, if that building was on fire and your kids or your dog were on top of that building, would you do it? And most people would answer, yes, they would do it. And the reason is they now have a strong enough “why”. Just crossing that plank of wood is not really a good enough reason for you to take that risk, but if you had to go take that risk in order to save a family member or a friend or a pet, chances are you’re going to make that happen.

And it’s the same way with buying real estate. When you’re deciding to buy a home, you really have to search for a strong enough “why” that’s going to help you want to take on the risk, want to battle through and get through the obstacles and see them for what they are, they’re just temporary setbacks, but you have the strength and you have the “why” that you can lean on to help you make it to the end.

So sit back, write it out, think about what are the things that really want to make you buy a home and focus on that “why” because you’re going to need it as you go through the home buying process.

Number two is you need to be open about your goal. We found that the people who are open, honest, and have conversations about their wanting to buy a home actually make it happen. When you start to tell other people, they hold you accountable.

One technique that we’ve heard of is called the PDA, which is a public display of accountability. You may have seen this on social media where somebody posts a workout photo, a status of their current shape and talking about how they want to lose weight or they want to get toned. They use that public accountability to help them get there. You can do the same thing when it comes to real estate. Talk to the people who are in your corner, your family members, your friends. Let them know what you’re trying to do and how they can help you get there because if they know that you’re trying to accomplish this big goal, chances are they’re not going to invite you to go out and spend money that you need to be saving for your first home.

So use the PDA, a public display of accountability. Let people know what you’re trying to do. Be open, be honest, and have conversations with the people who are in your corner.

And the third technique that’ll keep you motivated throughout the home buying process is to work with experts in the field. I know this may sound obvious, but you’d be surprised at how many people talk about buying their first home just with some family members who aren’t really experienced in home buying themselves. So you need to rely on the experts who have been through it, who have seen folks overcome and accomplish their goal of homeownership. So these experts in the field have seen it, they’ve been there, they’ve done that.

Rely on that expertise and that experience and that’ll help you reach the finish line yourself. If you need help connecting with a local real estate agent, credit expert, or a lender in your area, reach out to us. We’d love to connect you with somebody who’s there local who can help you get there.
